The project

The Pole-hugger ("L'abbracciapalo" in italian) is a project that aims to deal with the "green cities" theme in a different, more active and personal way.

Originally conceived as a submission for a design for public spaces contest proposed by Esterni (the association that manages Fuorisalone del Mobile in Milan), we are now putting this idea into practice with the help of some friends.

The pole-hugger is the union of a used and cleaned (tomato or beans)can, some muld, a little plant and a cable tie.

Once assembled, it can be hanged to a street pole, a traffic light, a fence and, in this simple way, add some green and fun to the dull city.

Our project is not ambitious for the structure, the design or the technique: it reduces to a minimum all the features demanded by the call such as creativity, sustainability, attention to the environment and to the public space, pro-activity of the citizen.

However it is very basic and so adaptable to different contexts and easily understandable. The pole-hugger uses ricycled materials that you can find everywhere; it's handcrafted and can be easily built; it doesn't require any special technique or manual abilities, but most important of all is useful!

"Do you need some rosemary for the roast?Because yesterday I've seen it at the crossing between Cherries Street and Peter Pan Avenue, hanged to the traffic light!"

The Pole-hugger is a project that changes depending on who does it:

it can enrich a street or a neighbourhood with aromas and parfumes and make them available for everyone

it can colour an area with flowers

it can create a plants-path, descoverable by adults and children

it can be a place for seeds, cutting, suggestions exchange among people

and more!
